Ariellah Aflalo will be doing a workshop and evening performance in Jackson, Mississippi this coming February. I don't know if the Sisters are interested in attending, since she does not, to my knowledge, do cabaret, but I wanted to spread the word to all the NOLA bellydancers I could think of...
ABOUT PETITE JAMILLA:
Bellydance Superstars youngest member Petite Jamilla, as pictured on the cover of “Live at the Follies Bergere” DVD has been touring with the Bellydance Superstars since January of 2004. Performing the celestial and inspiring double veil as a featured part of the show, is just a fraction of what this talented dancer has to offer. Since she was 17, Petite Jamilla has been teaching workshops that range from Zill Techniques with Modern Incorporations, Choreographed Fusion Drum Solo’s, and Spinning Introductions with Double Veil “How To’s.” By the age of 20, she had produced 2 instructional DVD’s [Beginner’s Dance Movements, and Secrets of the Double Veil] available for purchase through www.bohemianmarket.com. Cross-Cultural Fusions are a passionate focus for this dancer as her Irish/Native American ethnicity became the incentive to further explore and push the boundaries of fusion in dance. With training in Bellydance (taught by her mother, Jamilla Rasa), Polynesian, Scottish Highland, Modern Irish, and Cape Breton Step Dancing her unique blend began an unclassifiable style. Dually equipped as a classically trained musician in Western style compositions and Scottish/Irish blends - it was, of all things, the Highland Bagpipes that showcased Petite Jamilla’s talent for the critically acclaimed Rod Stewart in February of 2000.

Hi there!

I'm gonna be moving to Baton Rouge in the fall and I'm really excited about getting to know some of the dancers in the area. I currently live in Houston, where I am a member of Urban Gypsy and a substitute for Belladonna. I'm hoping to pick up a gig when I move, and I'm curious what the going rate is for a typical weekly show.
I'd really love to meet some dancers in the area and see you all perform. I found the events listed on the bayou shimmy site. Are there any others I should know about?

Thanks!
Emily

Hey Gang,
This is Jeniviva here from NYC. I'm going to be performing at the Convergence Festival, along with my partner Snakercharmer Maiiyah, in a few weeks and we lost our lodging connection : (.
We were hoping to maybe connect with a local Bellydancer and stay the weekend....no snakes either!
In return, we offer a pass to Convergence, and some money for your trouble, and heck, when you want to come to NYC you can stay with us for a weekend!
So we'd be getting in Friday afternoon and we split on Monday.
Any takers?
xoxo

I have been dancing for about 2 years in Lake Charles and have just now started reaching out and feeling comfortable going to workshops etc... I am glad to join this crew and would love to meet you all sometime at a workshop or something.

New! Beginning Tribal Belly Dance Classes at Krys' Studio!

Hi all. I haven't met you yet, but I'd like to take a second to introduce myself. My name is Amy and I just moved to New Orleans on Jan. 1st to take a job with the federal courts. I recently moved from San Diego where I was teaching an ATS beginning and advanced class for over four years.

I originally learned belly dance from two middle eastern ladies while in law school. Tala was from Jordan and Reem was from Bahrain. They were wonderful teachers and got me started on my path. After gradutation, I went to Arizona to go to library school and while there I studied cabaret style and joined a troupe. I moved to San Diego for a job and helped found an ATS troupe called Shuvani. I went out on my own about four years ago to teach ATS and have been teaching and having fun ever since!

I have attended several classes, workshops, and seminars with Paulette-Rees Denis of Gypsy Caravan, Kajira of Blacksheep Belly Dance, Urban Gypsy of Houston, and various other wonderful people. Their influences are in my dance and I incorporate various other traditions plus original moves and modifications.

So, now here is where NOLA comes in. Krys has invited me to begin teaching American Tribal Style (ATS) classes at her studio at DKT Studio, 8530 Oak Street. It will be on Thursday nights from 6-7 p.m. We are going to do a six week class to start, Feb. 2nd - Mar. 9th.

The cost is $15 to drop-in or $75 whole series ($12.50 per class).

This class will be small and intimate so I can get to know everyone and they can get to know me, so I am limiting it to 8-10 students. I will teach basic ATS belly dance moves along with cues and transitions.

If you are interested in attending, please let me know! Thanks and Dance On!

Amy (a.k.a. Shirin)

I was taking classes with Layla and Maria Celado before all of this horrible mess. I'm now living in Slidell for the time being, since my house was destroyed. I'm wondering if any of you are coming back to the neighboring areas and if you'd be interested in teaching, or at least doing private lessons in the near future. I miss dancing, and it would be a great stress relief. I wish everyone the best of luck in these awful times!

I Met GRETCHEN Friday Nite In DC...

She's a sweetie pie, folks (of course, you all know that). And, she and her husband are in good hands as she's holding it down in Baltimore, trying to get her life some stability, as you can imagine hundreds of thousands who had to flee NOLA and regroup from MI and AL respectively.

If I was in her position, I don;t know if bellydancing would be on my short list, but if you think about it, every1 needs an escape, and for her, many of her ''Sisters'' and others, bellydance gives that temporary escape. And, that escape was sensually displayed Friday night at a pre-Suhaila party thrown here in DC.

Once again proving, you can take a girl out of Nawlins, but you can;t take Nawlins out of the girl. :)~

Good Luck Folks,
B.

costumes for our displaced dance sisters

Hello! In Houston we are all very saddened by the losses wreaked by Katrina. My teen dance troupe would like to offer displaced dancers who may have lost everything gifts: for tribal dancers, custom-made hair yarns and flowers; for cabaret dancers, a hipscarf or china silk circle skirt. We also have access to costumes other dancers here in Houston are willing to donate. If we can help in this way, please let me know.

Best to you all!

Hi, I do not have a lot of tribal attire, however, I will donate what I can to a needy dancer. If any of the dancers are in Houston and wish to just come to my BD classes, they are free to do so at no cost. I also have donation boxes for food and regular clothing at my studio.

We will get through this together.

Sirrom Drum Jam 9/9/05-Houston,TEXAS

FROM: Debbie (Shakira Masood Ali)www.sirroms.com

Please spread the word that Sirrom School welcomes any and all dancers
and drummers who have been relocated to Houston from New Orleans free of
charge. Please have them contact me at school or just come in. Our drum jam is this Friday and part of the
admission price will go to the Katrina fund but we wanted to send a
special invitation to all dancers and drummers in the Houston area. And
starting with the drum jam on Friday, we will have a donation box for
canned goods and other items to be donated to the Red Cross.

Don't forget the show at Helios on Friday (you can head there after the
drum jam), plus two shows at Helios: One presented by Jenna Ali on
Sept. 13 and another presented by Fatine. More details on our
newsletter to follow this week.

COSTUMES:

Kudos to Fatine and the Teen Troup the following outpouring of
understanding of how each of use "needs" this dance:

Hi there. My teen troupe has offered to donate belly dance gear to
dancers who have been displaced to Texas because of Hurricane Katrina.
We recognize that this does not help with basic life necessities, but
each of us is participating individually in those efforts elsewhere. We
wanted to, as belly dancers, help our dance sisters in a way that is
special to us and which acknowledges how important the dance is in all
our lives. And for dancers who may have lost everything, a piece of
dance gear could be one tiny piece of something "normal." We know that
other local dancers have offered free classes to displaced dancers,
which is wonderful, and we feel that this is just a continuation of that
offering of sanity.

For cabaret dancers, we are offering a jingly hipscarf (while current
supplies last) or a china silk circle skirt. For tribal dancers, we are
offering yarn hair headpieces. If you know of anyone who might
appreciate these items, please let me know soon. We also need the
following information:

cabaret -- preference of hipscarf or circle skirt
circle skirt -- color preference; hip and length measurements
tribal -- color scheme; preference of single hairpiece, pigtail yairs,
or barrette

We also need to know where to send these items!

Thanks very much!

On 9/6/05, BayouShimmy <info@bayoushimmy.com> wrote:
Dear Friends and Dance Community,

Many of us have friends, family or at least acquaintances that have been seriously affected by Hurricane Katrina.

All of those evacuated, with whom I have been in contact, are either still in shock or are just really clueless about what they will be doing in the months to come.

This being said, BayouShimmy will accept donations of any sort or kind for local Baton Rouge Area distribution. We have numerous shelters and we are about to have a couple of tent cities nearby. I'm sure they will be happy to receive books, board games, clothing, basic toiletries, etc. and we will be more than happy to distribute whatever items you are willing to donate.

At the moment so far as friends and fellow artists are concerned, because many of them do not know where to go or what they are going to do for the upcoming indefinite period of time, there is some concern about sending them material goods. That is to say, they are technically without places to put 'stuff' and too much 'stuff' may be a hindrance at this time rather than a gift.

I have been asked by several people about setting up a 'PayPal' donation account. This has been done by one group of my friends for three of our immediate New Orleans friends. BayouShimmy would like to set up PayPal donation buttons, we're still working on this.

BayouShimmy will still gladly accept any items for any dancers and artists as well as trying to match items with artists. We will be trying to contact them all to let them know they can come to, email or call the studio for any costuming needs (in addition to other items once we have them available), but please try to keep the following in mind with regard to their needs:

>Costuming needs include: Hip scarves, Bedlah (Bras and Belts), Skirts, Finger Cymbals, Shoes, Veils, cover-ups, Cholis, hair pieces (tribal), MUSIC!!!! Miscellaneous Jewelry that will match anything!

>Most of these people are now officially in a transient state and are limited to the amount of items they can actually *own* and tote around at this time.

>While some of these people did 'land' in the Baton Rouge area, many are scattered where ever friends and family could take them in.

>Many of the people you might know are probably *not* in shelters, but that does not mean they are *not* without. In other words, yes they probably need underwear, socks and shoes too.

Organization is happening as quickly as possible. Please understand that while we are sending out this email (even though the overall picture is looking better), we are all still reeling from the effects of the past week. Several major roadways are still inaccessible making shipments slow and Baton Rouge traffic is starting to look like game day everyday. Your patience, compassion and generosity are welcomed beyond words.

If you are a dancer / musician / artist who is in need of the help we are trying to offer, please call or email us and we will be thrilled to try and get you what you need.

Yours truly in the dance,

Hi, Sister Dancers in New Orleans and surrounding areas...

How is everyone? Did everyone leave? We in Mobile are anxiously looking for word that everyone is safe. I saw the post by Mega that the NOmadic tribal ladies are safe. What about Gretchen, Kaye, Charlie, Marlane, and Everyone else??? Anyone hear anything?

Please let us know asap. ALSO, please let us know what you need for us to do for all of you.

Does anyone know where Kruz went?

Many prayers

This is a copy of a post from the Directors of Tribal Evolution, Brandy & Behka...

Not sure if you have heard, but Behka and I decided that the seminar just couldn't go on with the current state of affairs. We couldn't totally back out of the seminar, people have paid and have all their reservations, but we decided to make it a benefit for Hurricane survivors and their families instead of a for profit seminar. This means Behka and I will not take any profit from this event, but will instead donate it to benefit hurricane survivors and their families. Anyone from LA, MS or AL can come to the workshops and the show for free now. We will also be collecting items to distribute to local shelter collection sites at the workshops and show. We also hope to volunteer our time Sunday after the workshops are over at a local shelter.

We would love to have you all there if you can make it :) Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Peace,
B&B

6 out of 10 Sisters agree that we had a great time in Ft Walton Beach for the Artemis workshop hosted by Mystic Mirage. DJ and crew were fun and gracious and wow did they provide great food. The show rocked. We made it to the beach briefly on Sunday. Long enough to play in the water and sand. BTW... Stacey doesn't play nice, she throws sand. You've been warned.
“Pow” with Presence: Elegant Entrances and Fabulous Finales!

Entrances and Finales are major parts of choreography that will make your dance memorable. This workshop will teach you how to create an elegant and graceful entrance and to end your dance with a POW!! We will cover feet, arms, eye contact, head movement and staging. Discussions are based around what movements will make your ending powerful, traveling and stationary, the best poses and find what poses makes your body look “picture perfect” for the stage, restaurant and camera. This class is open to any level dancer.

Saturday 1-2:30pm - $25
Put some” BANG” in your hips: Pops and Locks
Pops and locks are a great accentuation in belly dance. Pops and locks will bring an added layer to fast or slow movement and can influence your dance to become your own individual style. Learn how to make them strong and tight as well as when and how to use them. This class covers what muscles control each action and make the lock and the pop happen with a focus on how to include this more modern movement in to traditional Egyptian style dance. This class is suitable for beginning level students with dance experience and all other levels.
Saturday 2:30 - 5:00pm

New Solace CD "Balance"

It’s been one and a half years since I have been working on the next Solace. A lot of work and research has been spent to get the sound that I am looking for. I am very happy to announce Solace’s forthcoming CD “Balance” (eve13), which will be released at Tribal Fest 2005, Saturday May 14 when the doors open. I could not make the Rakkasah release in March, there are just to many other things going on. It seems more appropriate to release it at Tribal Fest, since it has tribal fusion qualities. There will be pictures and clips on the EMP site soon, but for now, here is a description:

“There lies a place not often explored where the dragon and phoenix struggle toward balance. Tibetan horns are heard far off in the distance; flutes and vocals hum a solemn melody, fingers dance on the strings of a lute; rumbling drums echo like a crescendo of gusting wind. Solace takes us farther east fusing Middle Eastern compositions with Far Eastern themes and percussion. “Balance” marriages these distinct tonalities creating a unique cross-cultural blend of traditionalism and the electronic elements of Ambient, Trance and Trip-Hop.”

I will post the CD cover on the Solace tribe, more may come soon, and I will keep you all posted.

I appreciate all of the support and love that I’ve received over the years, thank you for allowing me to be myself within the realm of my creativity and art. I know sometimes my music goes to one extreme to another, but you have all stayed faithful and steadfast and I cannot say enough to the overwhelming response of admiration and support. To that, I tip my hat to you the fans, my friends, my vendors and all the musicians who have helped me through the years.

Yours in music and dance,
